And So It Begins—A New Race

The next morning when I woke I knew it was time to accept what was happening. First, I wrote a quick email to Tim to find out if he was planning to meet us in Chapel Hill for Cryder’s lacrosse game that coming weekend. I was pretty sure that Tim was heading to Alaska for some back-country skiing, but was equally hoping he might abandon that trip in light of the situation with Lee. Tim was the greater risk-taker of our two sons, and having him off in the wilds of Alaska was adding to my level of anxiety, though I’d never tell Tim that.

The other email went to Cryder who was embarking on his final season of Division I UNC lacrosse, and Lee was afraid that he was going to ruin it for our son.

Morning, Cryder. I told Dad I’d send you an email because he’s worried about you . . . he knows how similar you are to him, keeping things to yourself and worries you will shut down and stop caring about classes and lacrosse. Please stay focused on all that for him and make him proud. I know it is tough, but he loves you guys so much and knows how much we all love him and he will fight for us. Don’t you worry. I am here anytime you want to talk. He is really looking forward to seeing you, so we’ll have a good college weekend for him and then move forward and attack this stupid tumor. I love you very much and am sending hugs and smiles your way.
